For Belgium’s Tormented Souls, Euthanasia-Made-Easy Beckons

“Assisted suicide differs from euthanasia in that the patient himself, not a doctor, administers the lethal dose. That is crucial for many Americans, and polls suggest U.S. voters are more open to assisted suicide than euthanasia, though opponents claim one can lead to the other. Still, the battle on both sides is heating up.”

The Lethality of Loneliness

“As expected, he found the students with bodily symptoms of distress (poor sleep, high cortisol) were not the ones with too few acquaintances, but the ones who were unhappy about not having made close friends. These students also had higher than normal vascular resistance, which is caused by the arteries narrowing as their tissue becomes inflamed. High vascular resistance contributes to high blood pressure; it makes the heart work harder to pump blood and wears out the blood vessels. If it goes on for a long time, it can morph into heart disease. While Cole discovered that loneliness could hasten death in sick people, Cacioppo showed that it could make well people sick—and through the same method: by putting the body in fight-or-flight mode.”

Only the Lonely

“I used to think it utterly normal that I suffered from “suicidal ideation” on an almost daily basis. In other words, for as long as I can remember, the thought of ending my life came to me frequently and obsessively. But then it’s the thought behind the most famous speech in all history. To be, or not to be.”

My weekly highlights in no particular order!

81HNZ4LYwQL._SL1500_

  • Playing Fire Emblem: Awakening on the 3DS. Frederick: “Pick a God and pray!”. Love it!
  • I got a 2Kg medicine ball! You can do some great exercises with this thing.
  • I’m still ploughing through The Rise and Fall of Third Reich but it’s been a great read. I’m around 50% into it which is 600+ pages and i don’t want it to end. It’s that good. One of the best non-fiction books i’ve ever “read”.
  • Ofto & Tavas at Adoulwth Keryneia with good company.
  • It’s been a while since i watched a great documentary but i was fortunate enough to watch two this past long weekend. They were both fantastic. The Gatekeepers and The Act of Killing. The latter is quite a tough watch so make sure you are up for it, but both are a MUST WATCH!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Mine starts with a (re-)viewing of Star Trek (2009) tonight (together with the customary pop corn) to prepare for Star Trek : Into Darkness.

What’s cheaper than coffee in Cyprus?

514px-Capuccino_freddo_1Whenever i used to go past a packed coffee shop in Cyprus i wondered why would people pay EUR2-5 for a coffee. I’ve come to realise though that unless people invite you over to their home, you can’t get a cheaper form of entertainment or leisure than that.  Not to mention that you have the opportunity to let your kids’ wrath loose on strangers for a few hours something which most parents do…..

I’ve been trying to come up with other forms of entertainment/leisure.

Dinner is definitely more expensive unless you manage to locate a good and probably obscure souvlaki shop. Of course you are paying for food and not coffee but it is still a matter of spending 2-3hrs outside your home. In this respect it is comparable.

Movies again more expensive (and don’t get me started on 3D movies) and there you depend on (a) quality of the movie but that’s mostly down to your selection and (b) the people in the theatre with you. My experience is that it’s more likely than not to be ruined by the latter.

I imagine you can go to a park like the one in Akropolis or Athalassa but unless you take beverages with you that’s still going to end up more pricey.

So, how can you be entertained outside your own home in Cyprus? Does it even cost less than a coffee at Arabica, Starbucks, Presse, Costa etc?

Before you aim for someone’s job, look at the price they paid to get there

“Whenever I write about grad school, someone writes in the comments about how I’m just bitter that I didn’t get a degree.

But what I’m really bitter about is that no one wanted to have sex with me. Some famous poet was a visiting professor, hitting on every grad student but me. And Leslie Epstein was there, who is not only king of the Jews but the father of Theo Epstein, a big name in baseball. Leslie said I’m the best sex writer he’s ever read. So why wasn’t he asking me for sex?

Probably because I’m the master of bad sex. There is no anal penetration that I cannot ruin with a piece of poop at the end of the paragraph.”

Which Costas?

Last night, at 21:14, i got a call from an unknown Nicosia land line phone number.

Me: “Yes, hello?”

Stranger: “Yes, hello? Which Costas is this?”

From the sound of her voice i think she was around 55-65 years old.

Me: “Which Costas do you want?”

Older lady: “I don’t know. I have a number here with the name Costas next to it so i called to see who it is.”

Me: “Eeermm….Taliadoros.”

Older lady: “Hmmm…. It must be a mistake then.”

Me: “Ok.”

Older lady: “Sorry for bothering you but if your name is Costas, then happy nameday to you.”

Me: “Haha, no problem and thank you.”

Older lady: “Good night then.”

Me: “Good night.”
