International TableTop Day in Cyprus – April 5th 2014

The Cyprus Boardgamers Group has slowly been growing over the past couple of years with Game Night! at the Ayioi Omoloyites Cultural Worskshop which has now become weekly event in our calendar. On Saturday April 5 is the International TableTop Day. This is basically an arbitrary day chosen by Will Wheaton and Felicia Day to celebrate the hobby with gatherings taking place all around the world on that day.

So, we’ve decided to join in with an event of our own!

It’s going to be very relaxed affair with group members, together with friends and family, gathering around tables at the lovely Ayioi Omoloyites Cultural Workshop to play boardgames for most of the day. The Workshop has a small collection of board games but everyone can bring their own board games they wish to play.

This is an open event where anyone can join in and discover a hobby that brings people together and provides so much joy. It’s a hobby I’ve personally grown to love over the past few years.

Movie of the week – From Up on Poppy Hill

The story is set in 1963 in Yokohama. Kokuriko Manor sits on a hill overlooking the harbour. A 16 year-old girl, Umi, lives in that house. Every morning she raises a signal flag facing the sea. The flag means “I pray for safe voyages”. A 17 year-old boy, Shun, always sees this flag from the sea as he rides a tugboat to school. Gradually the pair are drawn to each other but they are faced with a sudden trial. Even so, they keep going without running from facing the hardships of reality.

Mr Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan

Ring ring.

These days, the phone only carries bad news.

It’s all “your student loan is past due” and “your uncle Chris is in the hospital.” If it’s anything fun or exciting, like an invitation to a party or a secret project in the works, it will come through the internet.

Ring ring.

Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan

https://costastaliadoros.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/mr_penumbras_24-hour_bookstore.jpg

Kat straightens her shoulders. “Okay, we’re going to play. To start, imagine the future. The good future. No nuclear bombs. Pretend you’re a science fiction writer.”

Okay: “World government…. no cancer… no hoverboards…..”

“Go further. What’s the good future after that?”

“Spaceships. Party on Mars.”

“Further.”

“Star Trek. Transporters. You can go anywhere.”

“Further.”

I pause for a moment, then realise: “I can’t”
