About Costas Taliadoros

Slighly bored, confused, in pain and desperately need some exercise.

Video games

A quick rundown.

Return of the Obra Dinn (PC) – finished

One of the best and most refreshing games I’ve played in recent years. It’s a game that i can recommend to almost anyone. I started a second play through to see what hints i missed the first time. Although i did miss things i’m not very likely to continue this second play through. Must

Baba is You (Switch) – currently playing

Another game that tries to do things differently and succeeds. The kind of puzzle game that makes you feel smart for finding the solution but never stupid for failing. I got stuck for a couple of days on a few levels and then one day i breezed through all of them. Funny how the brain works. You always have a few open levels to try and it’s very important because whenever you feel frustrated at 1-2 there are always others you can try. Highly recommend

Bye Bye BoxBoy (3DS) – currently playing

I’ve really enjoyed my time with this series. Bye Bye is the 3rd game (the 4th was released last week on the Switch which has added co-op for the first time) and although i still find it enjoyable, it has started to feel samey. I play just 1-2 levels every couple of days. Recommend

The Legend of Zelda (Switch) – burned out and unfinished?

After 150hrs+ i feel burned out and feeling bad about not finishing it. Brilliant game and i hope i find the motivation and desire soon to continue playing it.

Board games – 1st Quarter 2019 review

Total plays: 62

Distinct games: 27

New-to-me games: 4

Sol: Last Days of a Star, Treasure Island, Kashgar: Merchants of the Silk Road, Pergamon

Ten+ times: none

Five+ times: 3

Shadowrift, A Feast for Odin, Red7

Collection: 159
Acquired: 2
The Quest for El Dorado, A Feast for Odin: The Norwegians

I had been looking for the english version of The Quest for El Dorado for a long time when i got a heads up at BGG about limited stock at 365games so i went ahead and ordered it. Having said that, it’s been 2 weeks now and the game has still not arrived.

In a moment of weakness, following positive comments on the So Very Wrong About Games podcast, i got a copy of the first expansion of A Feast for Odin. I managed to play it solo once. I liked it but i regretted the purchase not just because it’s an expensive expansion but also because it’s unnecessary. The base game is excellent on its own.

Removed: 2

Space Alert, Space Alert: The New Frontier

Too many co-op games in my library and this has been sitting unplayed on my shelves for almost 5 years now.

Unplayed: 26

Best New to me:

Sol: Last Days of a Star, Kashgar: Merchants of the Silk Road

Two very different and very good games.

New 10s: n/a

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) – currently playing

Is this the best game I’ve ever played? Probably.

After 150+ hours i am slightly burned out but this is wonderful. A comment i heard about BoTW is the one i started using while describing it to other people. I’ve played some great games over the years. BoTW is magical. It’s given me moments of wonder i haven’t had since i was a teenager.

Never Stop Sneaking (Switch) – currently playing

After feeling burned out on BoTW (see above) i restarted this. It’s easy and a bit mindless. However, I’ve just realised the multiplier effect of kills in quick succession and this has made the levels more exciting.

Steam World Heist (Switch) – finished

An enjoyable game although i felt it dragged towards the end. After i finished it (All stars), i realised that i had also played the expansion and maybe that was why if felt it could have ended sooner. I wrote more about the game in a previous post. Looking forward to Steam World Quest now. Suggest

Trine (Switch) – finished

I was slightly disappointed with this one after hearing such great things about it. I think the fact that it was local Co-op (2 players) with long breaks between each session might have played a role. The art of the levels was too similar throughout the game as were the enemies. There was too much platforming for my taste. Having said all these i still had a good time with the game. Suggest

Still playing:
Picross S2 –
going through clip cross puzzles now

Board games – February highlights

It’s a belated February post for board games.

A Feast for Odin – Enthousiastic

Yes, it’s back! It found its way to the table 4 times in February (3 Solo, 1 two player) and i am happy it did. A Feast for Odin is such a wonderful game and it has now become my 2nd favourite Uwe Rosenberg game. During this excitement unfortunately i succumbed to temptation and purchased The Norwegians expansion. My regret of missing out on the Fields of Arle expansion played a big role in this. I felt guilty and regretted my decision as this is an expensive expansion and an unnecessary one. The base game is not missing anything. More about the expansion in the March post.

Sol: Last Days of a Star – Suggest

A board game resolution for 2019 is to continue reducing my board game collection but not by selling/giving unplayed games. That’s why i pushed to play a few new games to my groups in the hope that i would find games i would like to get rid of. Alas, Sol: Last Days of a Star is not one of them.

A game with lots of positive interaction, mechanics that make sense and are intuitive after a modest rules explanation. The game comes with beautiful and functional components. One thing that i like is that the game plays differently compared to how people expect it to. This might turn people off with some getting low scores but i have yet to see people not enjoy this game. I have only played this 3 players (plus solos) and i would like to see it with 4-5 players. Good game.

Grand Austria Hotel – Not for me/Avoid

Also played Grand Austria Hotel to which i had a very negative reaction to. One thing that i hated was they way it penalised players who did not focus on a specific track. This is something that i used to tolerate in games like Agricola but not anymore.

A couple of Shadowrift plays with 3 players for the first time. I enjoyed it but the upkeep is significant and i am usually the one doing it.  Finally 2 plays of Assault on Doomrock (very good) and Spirit Island which gets played almost every month.

Video games

Kingdom: Two Crowns (Switch) – finished

A few days ago a friend of mine came over for board games. We played for 1.5hrs and then for 5-6 hours switched to video games. Most of that time was spent on Kingdom: Two Crowns couch co-op. It was wonderful! It’s so much better to play with someone else to help cover ground on the bigger islands.

The experience reignited my desire to continue my solo campaign and i managed to reach the credits. I had some bad moments with the game (beggars not spawning, having only 1 knight on one side and a few more).  Also there are still things that are almost impossible to know unless you read about them online. My one regret is not being able to fully upgrade my towers.

At the end of the day however it was a very enjoyable experience. It has the Civ quality of just one more turn/day. There are a lot things i have not yet seen but i am probably done after 45+hrs. I would play it again co-op so there’s still that option. Suggest

SteamWorld Heist (Switch) – currently playing

I had started this on the Vita a few years ago but stopped playing after a few hours. I don’t remember why but it had nothing to do with the quality of the game because it’s good!

Although i like the Steamworld Universe i can’t say that the story is any good. However,  most of the characters you recruit are with some good lines. More importantly they are good in combat and feel different. Unless they are taken to battle (and survive) they don’t get XPs and it encourages me to try playing with all of them. Some i like more than others. For example Piper, the captain, is one of my favourites because she affects units around her. Ivanski is  tank with a rocket. I also like Beatrix and Valentine. I just recruited Fen and she/he has fantastic abilities. Like i said they are all good!

I’m trying to get 3 stars on all missions and i managed to do that for all so far (apart from 1). Repeating a level is not a chore as the level changes layout every time. So far there has not really been a need to repeat levels just for grinding purposes. Simply for getting the three stars.

Finally, the loot surprises after each battle are exciting. New weapons and gadgets.  Plus the new abilities of characters after they level up.

This looks like another wonderful game is the brilliant Steamworld series.

Picross 3D (3DS) – currently playing

Still going and i reached level 10. Gold up to Level 8. This is tough but so good!

Board games – January highlights

Kashgar: Merchants of the Silk Road –
I played this twice on the final day of January at Game Night. One of the better euro games I’ve played in the past year. It’s a very unique deck builder/card management game.

You start with 3 columns of character cards and each character sits in front of the other and you can do the actions only of the front row characters. Once you do that they move to the back of the column.  As the game progresses, you add more characters and the caravans get longer which means that you have a greater variety of characters and actions to perform but at the same time your caravans become less efficient i.e. takes longer to have access to the characters you want.

Very interesting decisions throughout the game and depending on the characters you add to your caravan it can play differently.  Its turns are fast and the game did not last more than 1 hour each time. Suggest to Enthousiastic

Pergamon – It was one of my oldest unplayed games. A light euro filler. I liked it a lot. The scoring strategy felt a bit obtuse on our first game but this will improve over time. Easy to teach, fast to play with some good player interaction especially during the funding phase. Suggest

Xenoshyft – Got it back to the table after a long time and played solo it a few times.  I played the Dreadmire box with The Brood and weather and I also did the same with the digital version. So glad to play it again as this is a cracking game. Enthousiastic

Shadowrun: Crossfire – Similar experience to Xenoshyft above. Enthousiastic

Magic Maze (with expansion) – It has lost some of its appeal but still good. The security guards in the expansion are a nice touch and will introduce them every time. Suggest

Nicosia Game Nights – Attended my first one in 2019 last night and i had a very good time. In all honesty i have not enjoyed one of these in a long time but i will try to attend once a month to support the group.
