I tried a few episodes of The West Wing and didn’t get into it – but I loved The Newsroom. Maybe I should give The West Wing another try.

I had the opposite experience James.
I watched 1 and 1/2 seasons of The Newsroom but found it “too in your face” with its opinions and its preaching. The West Wing does something similar to this but not to the same extent.
Also i found the characters in The West Wing considerably more interesting and likable.

I don’t know the newsroom but one of the reasons I avoided the west wing was because I thought it would be too dry and political and while it can be, I guess, I love that I actually like the character and chuckle more than once per episode. Still only mid season1 though. Would like like to hear if you two would recommend this ‘Newsroom’, never heard of it, for a try as well.

Yeah, i did not realise that there was this much “comedy” in The West Wing either. For me The Newsroom is exactly what you described as “too dry and political” taking itself too seriously without the interesting characters.
I did not like it (watched 1 and 1/2 seasons) but you should definitely give it a shot.
