Persepolis-books1and2-covers

Persepolis is a French-language autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi depicting her childhood up to her early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution.” – Wikipedia

When we hear about Iran or Iranians we usually think of “Khomeini, Mullahs, Islamic fundamendalists” and now probably “nuclear bomb”. When i was a student in London, during one of the flights to and from Larnaca i sat next to an Iranian. During a short conversation i implied that Iranians are Arabs.  “I don’t know how good your history is, but Persians are not Arabs” he told me. It stayed with me because i used to take great pride in my knowledge of history (i’d like to think that my E in History A’Levels of course was an aberration).

That remark made me realise my own ignorance and how misunderstood these intelligent, proud, beautiful and full of of history, people are. Again, i’m maybe generalising but this will keep my bias after reading news about Iran in better balance.

Despite being more interested in the historical events surrounding the Islamic Revolution of 1979 which are covered in the first book i was more drawn into the second which covers Satrapi’s life in Austria and Iran. An excellent read, which one can follow up with the animated movie. The animated version stands on its own as a superb piece of movie.
